Before You Buy or Recommend a Lash Serum, Read This

Lash serums are everywhere right now, and most people are using them without really understanding how they work.

Some serums are formulated with conditioning ingredients that support the health of the lash. Others contain prostaglandin analogues, which are active compounds that interact directly with the hair follicle.

Prostaglandin analogues work by signaling the follicle to stay in the growth phase longer. This is why lashes can appear longer and fuller over time. It is not just a surface level result. It is a biological response happening at the root.

What to look for on an ingredient list

Prostaglandin analogues are not always labeled clearly as “prostaglandins.” They often appear under longer, more complex names.

Some of the most common ones include:

Isopropyl Cloprostenate
Dechloro Dihydroxy Difluoro Ethylcloprostenolamide
Ethyl Tafluprostamide
Methylamido Dihydro Noralfaprostal

These ingredients are typically listed toward the end of the ingredient list because they are used in small amounts, but they are still highly active.

A simple way to recognize them is to look for names that include
prost
prostamide
or cloprostenate

When used daily, this signal continues. The follicle stays stimulated as long as the product is being applied. Once you stop, the lashes gradually return to their natural cycle.

This does not mean it is harmful for everyone. Many people use these products and see results with no concerns. SInce it is active, the surrounding skin and tissue can also respond. Some users may experience sensitivity, darkening around the eye area, or changes in the skin over time.

This is part of the reason why prostaglandin analogues are not permitted in cosmetic lash serums in Canada. The concern is not immediate damage, but the long term effect of continuous stimulation in such a delicate area.

On the other side, there are serums formulated with peptides, vitamins, and conditioning ingredients. These do not change the growth cycle. Instead, they support stronger, healthier lashes that are less prone to breakage.

The results are more gradual, but for many clients, this is a better long term approach.

This is not about saying one is good or bad. It is about understanding the difference. As artists, this is where our value grows. Not just in application, but in guidance, because anything that creates results at this level deserves awareness.
